Russia is a country where demand for cheap, well designed cars has grown dramatically amid an economic boom which has lasted for more than a decade. Russians bought about 1.65 million cars in the first half of 2008, which marked a growth of around 41 percent over the previous year. Apart from the cars from local Russian auto makers such as Volga, American cars like Ford and Chevrolet are popular in Russia, because of the fact that these cars have the left-hand-drive system which is the norm in Russia. Right-hand-drive cars like the ones made in Japan are still allowed to run on the Russian roads and therefore there is a huge demand for used Japanese cars and trucks – especially in the far eastern regions of Russia such as Vladivostok. Russia has more than 1.6 million Right-hand-drive vehicles on its roads, as per the latest estimates. Japanese automakers like Mitsubishi, Toyota and Suzuki are already exporting large number of cars to Russia. Japanese cars like the Mitsubishi Lancer are very popular in Russia, and Japanese auto makers can not cope up with this growing demand.
‘Used cars from Japan are of very high quality and are reasonably priced, and so they are very popular in Russia. The Russians tend to go for sturdy four-wheel-drive cars, because Russian road conditions are not very good''’, says Mr. Kenji Yoshimoto, President of Best Trading Co. This is because Japanese people will normally hold on to their car only for about four years, as the car inspection cost rises dramatically once the car life exceeds four years. Also, Japanese cars are well maintained, Japanese road conditions are very good, and the cars are not used much by their owners as public transportation like trains and buses are the preferred and faster modes of transportation in Japanese cities. The high quality underbody treatments of Japanese vehicles, also makes the cars sturdy to run on Russian roads, where salt is used liberally in the winter. Russian buyers, therefore, view Japanese cars as good value for money.
The demand for used cars from Japan is thus expected to rise amid the global recession.
