October 23, 2007 - Florida is known to have the very best SCUBA diving in the continental United States. In particular, Fort Lauderdale, FL is considered to be the creme-de-la-creme of South Florida diving. Miles of coral reef and countless shipwrecks all within 3 miles of the coast make for extraordinary diving. But, perhaps the highlight of South Florida's tropical, warm water diving is the opportunity to interact with nurse sharks.
The nurse shark is beautiful, curious and friendly. At a top length of about 14 feet, the nurse shark is a large, sluggishly-moving, creature that spends most of the day resting in a group of other nurse sharks. During the night, though, nurse sharks spend their time alone while they hunt for food.
They are largely creatures of habit and seem to prefer to keep to specific hunting grounds as they search for crustaceans, squid, and other fish. Stingrays are one of their favorite prey, although nurse sharks have been known to hover slightly above the ocean floor, creating a mock shelter for crustaceans and other small creatures to use. Once the creatures hide there, the nurse sharks can then eat them, using (in part) their large throat cavities to suck the prey into their bodies.
And that’s not all there is to discover about this interesting shark species. For instance, the nurse shark does not need to move in order to breathe. That’s because it can push water over its gills. It also does not migrate. It actually adapts to any cold water in its usual environment by becoming even less active. And, finally, it has been known to use its large pectoral fins to move itself along the ocean floor, so that it looks as if it is walking! While there are many other exciting recreational opportunities in sunny Florida, the nurse shark is a fascinating animal that deserves a look from any visitor coming to Fort Lauderdale.
