April 23, 2009 - Thomas Beardsley, President of Beardsley and Son, an agricultural services company providing fertilization and related services to growers in the Oxnard area of Southern California reports changes in how major customers utilize fertilization services. “Our customers as a cost control have recently reduced the amount of fertilizer utilized per acre of product grown. While this initially impacted our revenue” reports Tom, “it caused us to become more creative in finding opportunities to expand services needed by growers.” Using the equipment they already had on site for fertilization projects to perform other needed tasks was a natural area to explore. “We found among tomato and pepper growers there was a need for soil work after fertilization that was being done with the grower’s own equipment and labor. By investing in modifications to our equipment we are able to provide this service at a price that is attractive to the grower as it frees their resources for other needed tasks.”
There is a no doubt that the economy in 2009 is presenting challenges to most businesses. Being a trusted partner with customers is a strategy that Beardsley & Son uses to help themselves and the growers they serve. “In 2008 changes in the cost of structure of some of the products we apply caused us to reduce prices of those products sold to our customers rather than try to gain a short term windfall.
