    Dr. Heimlich, a retired thoracic surgeon, is known for his lifesaving innovations, which include the Heimlich Maneuver, that has enabled everyone, including children and adults, to save thousands of choking and drowning victims, and the Heimlich MicroTrach, which improves the quality of life for people requiring oxygen. Dr. Heimlich's greatest achievement is his invention of the Heimlich Chest Drain Valve, which was introduced in 1962.     Dr. Heimlich, who graduated from Cornell University and Cornell University Medical College, recently authored his memoir -- HEIMLICH'S MANEUVERS: My Seventy Years Of Lifesaving Innovation. His long distinguished career includes serving voluntary extra-hazardous duty in China while a U.S. Navy physician during World War II; attending surgeon at Mount Sinai Hospital and Montefiore Hospital in New York; associate clinical professor of surgery at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine; and Director of Surgery at the Jewish Hospital in Cincinnati. He has published more than 100 scientific papers in such prestigious outlets as the New England Journal of Medicine, the Journal of the American Medical Association, Postgraduate Medicine, Chest, and more.

    Other honors that have been bestowed upon Dr. Heimlich include the American Academy of Achievement Award and the Albert Lasker Award, as well as inductions into the Safety and Health Hall of Fame International as well as the Engineering and Science Hall of Fame.
