(1888PressRelease) November 01, 2009 - MELBOURNE, Florida, October 30, 2009 — Bayside High School graduate Derick Pierre is the first student to receive a 'Life Gets Better Scholarship' sponsored by Harris Corporation (NYSE:HRS) in partnership with Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU). The scholarship covers the cost of Pierre's tuition, fees, room and board, and books for four years. It also includes a $500 stipend each semester, summer internships at Harris, and a laptop computer.

Pierre, 17, was selected for the scholarship based on his academic achievements, his strong interest in studying engineering, and his participation in school organizations such as the Robotics Club and Multicultural Club. He is the youngest child in his family and the first to attend college.

He was recognized for his accomplishment at a luncheon hosted by Jeff Shuman, Harris vice president of Human Resources and Corporate Relations. Other attendees included Dick Blake, Rockledge city councilman and president of FAMU's Brevard County Alumni Chapter; and Clara Davis, an employee of Harris Government Communications Systems, FAMU alumnus and chapter member.

"This scholarship and internship creates possibilities, and it is inspirational for all of us to see a student from our local community excel, as Derick has done," said Shuman. "We are honored to be able to provide the resources needed to assist Derick in his continued success."

"It is a great experience when you have a strong partnership such as the one between the FAMU Alumni Brevard Chapter and Harris," said Blake. "Being an educator, I know how important providing education is to students, so it's wonderful that Harris is doing exactly that in our local community."
