Ballet-barbershops-big Boi: Men Get Exposed To Ballet While Getting A Haircut

Barbershop Digest showcases the upcoming Atlanta Ballet production of “big” featuring music from Outkast’s Big Boi along with artists from his label Purple Ribbon Music.

(1888PressRelease) April 08, 2008 - Atlanta, GA- When Black men congregate and discuss their issues and interests, they do so in Black barbershops. This is the inspiration for a new publication called Barbershop Digest.

The magazine, which premiered January 5, 2008, is distributed throughout the Metro Atlanta area. The April issue showcases the upcoming Atlanta Ballet production of “big” featuring music from Outkast’s Big Boi along with artists from his label Purple Ribbon Music.

We wanted to absolutely blow this story out,” said Editor-in-Chief Brian Egeston. “We live for these kinds of stories when men of color get to show their skills across different mediums of art. You won’t find another publication in the whole world who gave as much exposure to the ballet as we did. Brothers in the ballet…come on; we had to do it big. Travis Hudgons, our creative director got some great images and a design concept. And the rest is history.”

The April issue also introduces the world to Kameron Davis, a 12-year old who has never been in ballet before, but is one of the stars of the show.

Egeston noted that magazine, like Black barbershops, is all about balance. The teacher can have conversation with a thug. Strangers become associates if only for a moment. Some of the features in the magazine include a barbershop profile, a health section titled ‘Staying Power’, and a feature call ‘Talking Shop’ where men in a local barbershop have a conversation about politics, sports or money.

We visit various barbershops to find out what kind of deal we can get on a product or a service. It only makes sense to hook brothers up with a free magazine about our culture and about the place where we love to congregate.”

Barbershop Digest is a full-color narrow cast niche publication, reaching more than 100,000 Black men across a diverse section of demographics. Revealing, entertaining and thought provoking, Barbershop Digest is a publication on the pulse of Black men.

Barbershop Digest is slated to have a one-year test run in Atlanta before making a regional launch in the Southeast followed soon after by a national campaign.
