Baldwins- London's Oldest And Most Established Herbalist

1844 was a fairly uneventful year with a couple of notable exceptions. A certain Mr Goodyear patented a process to vulcanize rubber tyres – the rest, as we say, is history – and George Baldwin opened what seemed like a fairly unremarkable shop selling herbs and natural remedies at 77 Walworth Road, London.

(1888PressRelease) March 06, 2008 - George might not have known what he was starting, but over the next 50 years the shop grew and flourished being taken over by his son (another George) at the turn of the century. We may think that there are no similarities between businesses and customers in the mid 19th century and those of today, but there is one area where it seems we are turning full circle. In 1844 healthcare and medical science was, at its best, rudimentary. If you became seriously ill you most likely faced two outcomes; either you got better or you died! Being given ready access to herbs and traditional medicines – even at a time when far less was known about their effectiveness – was quite literally a lifeline to people who became sick.

With today’s exceptionally high levels of healthcare someone predicting the future back in 1844 might have concluded that we’d have no need for herbal and natural remedies in our modern world…but how wrong they would be. As science progresses researchers continue to prove the efficacies of ancient medicine. It seems the more we learn, the more we realise just how powerful herbs and natural remedies can be.

It’s a shame that we failed to learn more from some of the ancient civilisations such as the Chinese and Native Americans, but perhaps we can go a little way towards making up for lost time. Baldwins brings us bang up to date with extensive availability of products: in the shop, via mail order from the catalogue or for purchase online. Natural products are among the highest growth industries in the UK; a demonstration of our commitment to getting back to ‘old fashioned’ but highly effective herbal and natural treatments.

Today Baldwins Products include cosmetics, luxury bath and spa ranges, craft supplies and lots more. Current head of Baldwins, Steve Dagnell, is proud of his company’s history: “Few businesses can claim such a long timeline as ours. We don’t want to be stuck in the past but we do hold on to the traditional values that George Baldwin began, namely excellent customer service and a vast range of products. Anyone visiting our shop will find it’s a real Alladin’s cave; in fact some of our regulars browse for hours!”

Talking of ‘regulars’ if you visit the shop you might find yourself rubbing shoulders with a celebrity. Some of London’s most famous residents including film stars, TV presenters and sports personalities can be seen shopping in Walworth Road. But as Baldwins is the leading and most established herbalist it’s hardly surprising they make it a regular haunt.
