Baby Boomers Take To The Web To Start New Business

More baby boomers than ever are engaging in online business networking as the recession forces them out of corporate life, according to a survey by popular business network Ecademy.

(1888PressRelease) March 06, 2009 - In the survey of over 3,000 business owners conducted last month by Contact Marketing & Consultancy on behalf of the popular business networking site, there was a noticeable rise in members over the age of 44.

Penny Power, founder of Ecademy, believes that with the continued flow of blue collar workers into the unemployment pool, more ‘baby boomers’ (those born between 1946 and 1964) will be looking to start up their own business as a self-employed consultant.

Earlier this week, research by investment firm Standard Life* revealed that a third of people aged 45-65 wanted to work in later life and set up their own businesses and Power agrees that the older generation could well pull Britain out of recession and says that Ecademy remains ‘primarily the over 40’s business network, a great set of people with the values, knowledge and experience much needed in these economic times.’

Power says “There are a number of highly skilled people currently out of work with plenty to give and many years of experience. The shortage of available jobs to fall into means that these people are increasingly relying on their network for support as it become clear that in the current climate, it is far safer to find ways of being a supplier of six than an employee of one.”

The survey also revealed that over a quarter supplied business services, followed by IT and Marketing Services. Power strongly believes that those who can adapt their proposition to the needs of the marketplace will prosper in coming months.

“Many will find that they can’t secure the same job role in the same industry as they have just come from, but now is the perfect time to take a step back and look at what it is that you are really good at and how you can use this skill to help others and contribute to the economy. This survey helps drum home the fact that there are some serious business opportunities online for those who can establish a strong proposition and gain a good solid reputation with others. Whilst many other networks simply allow connections to take place, Ecademy has excelled as enabling relationships to be nurtured in an environment which enables them to personally develop and for business to come as a result,” says Power.
