In June 2007, Verizon named him as the Chief Information Officer (CIO) responsible for the company's Information Technology strategy, systems portfolio development and operation.
For simplifying IT and showing the business how to innovate, IDG's Computerworld named him as Premier 100 IT Leaders 2008.
The Asian American Business Development Center (AABDC) named Ajay Waghray Chief Information Officer of Verizon Wireless as one of 50 Outstanding Asian Americans in Business. AABDC has been supporting Asian American businesses and organizing the Outstanding 50 Asian Americans in Business award since 2001.
On May 28, 2008, in a gala function held at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in midtown Manhattan New York City to pay tribute and celebrate the achievements of 50 recipients of the AABDC's "Outstanding 50 Asian Americans in Business" award, Ajay Waghray received this Business world's top honor.
Ajay Waghray obtained his B.E. (Hons) Mechanical Engineering from Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS) Pilani where he was a student from 1978 to 1983. Year 2008 happens to be the Silver Jubilee Reunion year for Ajay and the celebrations have been slated at Pilani in the first week of October 2008.
In an exclusive message to BITS Alumni Association (BITSAA), Ajay has conveyed 'I am proud to be an alumnus of BITS, Pilani and BITS has provided me the educational background and the integrated foundation that has enabled me to contribute to the corporate world.'
There is no doubt that Ajay who has integrated himself into the excellence circuit is bound to bag many more awards in the times to come and add glory to his alma mater BITS Pilani as he like every other BITSian is a dreamer who can find his way through the night of a new moon day and see the dawn before the rest of the world.
