August 17, 2007 - Stacey Frost, founder of San Francisco-based Urban Re:Vision (www.urbanrevision.com) has announced an exciting, two-phased program intended to raise awareness of the economic, environmental and social benefits of sustainability.
On Sunday, August 19th from 1:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., volunteers will visit over 40 homes in San Francisco’s Bayview District to exchange incandescent bulbs with energy-efficient CFL bulbs. Other local residents will also be given the opportunity to take part by bringing their old bulbs to the Urban Re:Vision staging area for disposal in exchange for new CFL bulbs.
The staging area will be in the 1700 block of Newcomb Ave. and residents living between Phelps St. to the North, Oakdale Ave. to the West, LaSalle Ave. to the East and 3rd St. to the South will be eligible to participate with proof of residency.
In all, 1,000 CFL bulbs donated by San Francisco mainstay Cole Hardware will be exchanged with the event not only highlighting the benefits of energy conservation but will provide a collective savings of approximately $15,000 in electric bills over the course of one year.
Urban Re:Vision is also partnering on the project with Eric Hale of the San Francisco chapter of Architecture for Humanity (www.architectureforhumanyity.org). The two organizations will again join forces on September 29th as they host a festival on the closed-to-traffic Newcomb Ave. to provide a sneak peek at the proposed “greening” of the block which is expected to take place in 2008. The event will include the laying of sod and positioning of trees as well as food, live-music, art projects and the opportunity for area residents to become involved in the renovation of their neighborhood.
“We are thrilled to be able to offer the residents of the Bayview District this opportunity to enjoy the benefits of sustainability,” says Frost who is heading a five-part international competition to secure sustainability-focused design proposals for incorporation into the renovation of a major-market city block thereby creating the National prototype of sustainable urban living. “We’re proud to be working with Architecture for Humanity and Cole Hardware, each of whom have shown such an incredible commitment to bettering the lives of the City’s residents. Through these types of endeavors, we have great hope that even more sustainability will soon be integrated throughout the City.”
Architecture for Humanity’s Eric Hale echoes those sentiments. “This initial joint-effort with Urban Re:Vision will not only plant the seeds of the environmental and financial benefits that come with sustainability but will increase the communities awareness as to the upcoming projects that have been created to enhance the quality of life throughout the area.”
With four locations throughout San Francisco, Cole Hardware has created a variety of partnership and outreach programs to encourage urban sustainability. Urban Re:Vision has identified over 40 homes in the Bayview District to receive visits from volunteers to on August 19th to change existing bulbs. Any resident within the immediate area is also welcome to bring their current incandescent bulbs to the staging area to receive energy-efficient CFL bulbs in a one-for-one exchange. Literature will also be available to provide tips on how to create a more sustainable lifestyle as well as background on the upcoming Bayview Restoration Project.
