May 01, 2009 - After winning the 2008 Hollywood Film Festival’s Best Short Film Award with her inspirational film, Yours Truly, Hockenbery decided to produce another uplifting film in hopes of encouraging single mothers to hang in there. Mojave Philosophy, is a six-minute film about a single mother and truck stop waitress who finds simple wisdom and redemption in the middle of the Mojave Desert. Viewers from all walks of life are connecting with Hockenbery’s film, Mojave Philosophy and critics have compared the film’s uplifting message to Forrest Gump.
Producer, Sandy Hockenbery, raised two children by herself and admits that it wasn’t always easy. “It was hard to give up living in a middle class environment with the big house, luxurious lifestyle and dinners out every night. But in the end, the decision that I made and the minor, material sacrifices were worth it all. Although I gave up the material things, I had my kids and we started a new life in a brand new environment.”
The short film, Mojave Philosophy is a tribute to working, single mothers. Shot on location in the Mojave Desert, the dismal surroundings reflect the despair and hopelessness so many single mothers go through. But the character’s journey into the desert leads her home to her child where she finds that love makes it all worthwhile. “The script by writer, Kelly Reno really struck a chord with me and I knew that this was a film we had to make,“ Hockenbery said. “It’s about finding hope despite the hardships we all face in life. The character is tough without being a victim and she’s dedicated to making a good life for her child despite all the reasons she should pack up and leave. She’s stable and her roots run deep like a palm tree. I want to make films that bring happiness and hope to people. If one of my films can accomplish that despite the turbulent times we’re living in, then I’ve accomplished my goal.”
Mojave Philosophy, produced by Sandy Hockenbery and directed by Tom Wozny, was accepted into The Doorpost Film Project, an international film competition for inspirational shorts.
