Eyes are an expressive feature - one that people notice first - and your eyelids are part of that feature. The eyes are also the first of our features to show signs of age. As skin around the eye area ages, excess folds appear in the upper and lower lids. Blepharoplasty can have a dramatic effect on your eyelids, restoring a brighter, more rested appearance. Blepharoplasty is one of the most satisfying facial cosmetic procedures because recovery is brief while results are long lasting.
And let's face it; when we look better, we feel better. Over time, your upper eyelid skin lengthens and droops because of gravity. Every blink causes the tiniest stretch of elastic fibers in the skin and muscle fibers of the eyelid's levator muscle, which is the muscle responsible for lifting your eyelid. The eventual stretching forms a hood over the eyelid and changes a person's facial expression. Women notice this extra overhanging skin more often since they have more difficulty applying makeup to their upper lids.
Blepharoplasty is a surgical eyelid procedure, which may correct drooping upper eyelids and puffy bags below the eyes. These conditions may make an individual look older than he or she truly is, and may give the false appearance of being weary or fatigued. Drooping upper eyelids may even result in diminished peripheral vision due to limitations in the upper and lateral fields. In a typical procedure, the surgeon makes incisions following the natural lines of your eyelids; in the creases of your upper lids, and just below the lashes in the lower lids. The incisions may extend into the crow's feet or laugh lines at the outer corners of your eyes. Working through these incisions, the surgeon separates the skin from underlying fatty tissue and muscle, removes excess fat, and often trims sagging skin and muscle.
The incisions are then closed with very fine sutures. If you have a pocket of fat beneath your lower eyelids but don't need to have any skin removed, your surgeon may perform a transconjunctival blepharoplasty.
In this procedure the incision is made inside your lower eyelid, leaving no visible scar. It is usually performed on younger patients with thicker, more elastic skin. Blepharoplasty usually takes one to three hours, depending on the extent of the surgery. If you're having all four eyelids done, the surgeon will probably work on the upper lids first, then the lower ones.
After the first couple of weeks, patient will begin to see the aesthetic results of the surgery. However, patient won’t have the best results for up to 6 months following surgery. During this period, the incision lines will fade from slightly pink color to nearly invisible thin white lines. In most cases, patient may begin to wear makeup again (on the eyelids) about 7 to 10 days after the surgery. The results are often dramatic and are likely to restore appearance to patients face. Patient may also enjoy improved peripheral vision. In most cases, the results last for many years or even a lifetime.
