Chic Galleria: D.E. Boone says, "Instead of crying about being alone, let's reflect, laugh, and throw a party." That's why the New York City native created, Legs Talk: A Modern Girl's Dating Tale. It all began a few years ago, when author Boone realized that when it comes to some relationships, there are more downs than ups. "Not everyone can relate to the unbelievably sweet sayings we often read in most gift books and greeting cards," says Boone. "In fact, most people never talk like that."
Inspired by the edgier side of dating, Boone reveals what women encounter when faced with a man's outrageous obsessions. As a result, Boone departs from the typical sweet dialogue; in its place, are animated exchanges with lots of attitude. "I wanted to confront the realities of our less than fairy-tale like relationships," says Boone. "But do it in a distinctive and entertaining way." Most couples bicker from time to time - hopefully they can work it out. On the other hand, if they cannot, maybe they should split up.
Legs Talk uses photos of a pair of woman’s legs and text to tell the story of one woman’s relationship. The idea came when my friend was complaining about her boyfriend for the thousandth time. Suddenly we realized that when it comes to some relationships, there are more downs than ups. At the time, my friend and I joked about creating a series of greeting cards with a theme of 'you need to do better, or you will lose me' message."
Boone started working on the greeting card line but decided instead to put it together with a narrative that would take the reader from the beginning of a relationship to its end. As a fan of classic movies, Boone noticed that legs seemed to be an important aspect and soon decided to make them a part of his own storyline.
“I thought they had a lot to say,” Boone said.
The approach Boone, who has a background in graphic design, used to put together the book was similar to what he would have done had he been making a film, including putting together storyboards. As he got started, Boone spoke with many of his female friends to fully understand the perspective of a female, saying that he learned a lot through doing so. He also wanted to create a book that both genders could enjoy.
So far, Boone said that the feedback he has been getting has been overwhelming, from both men and women. He also said that there have been many people who were surprised to discover a man had written Legs Talk, which he said was one of the best compliments he could have gotten.
"Personally, I always thrilled when someone tells my book put a smile on their face. I am also delighted to learn that some women are buying the book for their girlfriends as a fun get-over-him gift."
