Australian Tanning Program Announced

The Australian Tanning Institute launches new online program to offer education and certification to tanning salons across Australia and New Zealand.

(1888PressRelease) September 27, 2007 - Australia, -- The Australian Tanning Institute (ATI) announced today the launch of its Australian tanning certification program. ATI offers education and certification to Indoor Tanning and Sunless professionals across Australia and New Zealand through training, testing, continuing education, and a positive public-relations program. In June 2001, staff at ATI helped launch the first online option for tanning certification across North America!

“ATI is dedicated to helping the thousands of new and existing tanning professionals across Australia grow their tanning knowledge and take their tanning businesses to the next level,” said Rick Mattoon ATI President. “Dedicated to tanning salons and tanning consumers, ATI strives to be the Premier-Source for tanning certification and training.”

At present the solarium industry in Australia and New Zealand is not regulated.

With the lack of mandated tanning standards and the need for harmonized solaria procedures, the Australian Tanning Institute supports the use of Australian Standard (AS/NZS 2635:2002) for Solaria for Cosmetic Purposes. This "voluntary code of conduct" was developed by Standards Australia/New Zealand in 1983 and revised in 2002 in an attempt to address safety issues associated with solarium use.

Specifically, the ATI certification program covers:

- The Australian Standard (AS/NZS 2635:2002) for Solaria and Cosmetic Purposes,
- Procedures for correct operation of the tanning facility and tanning equipment.
- Recognition of injury or overexposure to UV light,
- The tanning equipment manufacturer's procedures for operation and maintenance of the tanning equipment,
- The determination of skin type on consumers and appropriate determination of duration of exposure to registered tanning equipment,
- Emergency procedures to be used in case of injury, and more.
