October 11, 2006 - According to the latest statistics, more households and businesses are using broadband to connect to the internet than ever before. The Yanke Group reports that 33 million American households had broadband in 2004 and projects that number will roughly double in 2008 to 62 million households. Many attribute the increasing broadband usage to decreasing cost and specials that Internet Service Providers (ISPs) are giving their customers along with the publics demand to view websites faster. “With websites having cool animation, video, sound and content, it is irritating to have wait for the pages to load with a dial up connection”, says Kati Franck who switched from dial up to a cable internet.
With the increasing speed comes the need for website owners to want more interactive and attention grabbing websites. “Because of slow internet connections, websites tried to keep flash, videos and MP3 files to a minimum; if not have them at all.” Says Kai Mahi of Pro Client Host (http://www.proclienthost.com); a website hosting solution provider. “Now that more households have broadband connections, businesses as well as personal website owners want to put some form of multimedia downloading or streaming on there website.”
Mahi at ProClientHost.com and other website hosting companies have made multimedia (flash, video and audio) streaming their focal point when trying to attract customers to come to there website. Web developer Derick Mont says “a lot of clients ask if they could put there video and audio presentations on there site. It was possible if they got a hosting server and they wanted a certain number of people coming to there site.” Mont further adds, “now that broadband is becoming more popular and hosting providers like PCH are more affordable, I'm happy to answer yes.”
What are the benefits of Multimedia?
With higher bandwidth, and a greater usage of sound and video, people can design their site to become more entertaining. People today want not only quick responsiveness from a website, but also to feel like they are watching TV. Some studies show that visitors to sites, on average read only a few paragraphs of content. When it comes to watching video, audiences are largely more interested in what your website has to say. One, because it is easier to get your message across, and two, audiences like me are lazy.
