  • Los Angeles-Long Beach, CA (1888PressRelease) February 24, 2016 - It was Michael Kors who said, "Clothes are like a good meal, a good movie, great pieces of music."

On Saturday, February 27, Woodbury University's Fashion Design Department will bring Kors' dictum to life, as students team up with the Burbank Philharmonic Orchestra for "Fashion Meets the Phil," a very special 25th Anniversary Gala Concert, at Ambassador Auditorium, 131 St. John Street, in Pasadena. The program begins at 8 p.m. and admission is free.

For the third year, Woodbury Fashion Design students have worked with the orchestra to design gowns for musicians, who this year include featured cellist Annie Jacobs-Perkins and violinist Kelley Park, both grand prize winners of recent Hennings-Fischer Young Artists Competitions. Student designers have been tasked with creating garments that enhance the music and the visual presentation of it - without hindering the musicians' ability to perform. Both gown designers and the musicians wearing them will be feted during intermission. The program was directed by Fashion Design Interim Department Chair Anna Leiker, in conjunction with Prof. Kathryn Hagen, Prof. Karolyn Kiisel and Adjunct Prof. Wayne Kastning.

With Maestro Steven Kerstein directing, the evening's program will include:

o Overture to "La Forza del Destino" by Verdi, conducted by Assistant Conductor Michael Stanley
o "Pace, Pace mio Dio" from La Forza del Destino by Verdi; Julie Adams, Soprano
o Concerto for Cello and Orchestra by Elgar; Annie Jacobs-Perkins, Cello
o "Ach ich fuhls" from The Magic Flute by Mozart
o "Depuis le Jour" from Louise by Charpentier
o Romeo & Juliet by Tchaikovsky

"Our collaboration with the Burbank Philharmonic carries on Woodbury's proud tradition of leadership in fashion design," said Leiker, Fashion Design Interim Department Chair. "We provide our students with state-of-the-art tools, state-of-the-industry talent and sterling opportunities to showcase their skills. As key players in the vibrant Southern California fashion scene, Woodbury students consistently demonstrate a real flair for costume design and fabrication."

Accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD) and the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC), Fashion Department program highlights include the annual Woodbury Fashion Show (open to sophomores, juniors, and seniors to showcase their projects), access to the Fashion Study Collection (more than 5,000 pieces, some dating back to the early 1800s), local lectures, museums, galleries, and exhibitions exploring a variety of topics including social and cultural issues, and Study Abroad experiences.
