Arthritis Patients Back On Their Feet With New Technique at Bangkok Hospital

Bangkok Hospital is now offering Birmingham Hip ® Resurfacing, as a new-century alternative to total hip replacement for arthritis, fracture and developmental hip problems. The new technique expands the hospital's already cutting-edge treatment options and equipment.

(1888PressRelease) November 26, 2008 - Bangkok, Thailand – Bangkok Hospital has begun offering patients who suffer from arthritis or developmental hip problems, or have fractures, Birmingham Hip ® Resurfacing as a new alternative to hip replacement.

Traditional hip replacements often cause proximal femoral stress shielding, as well as bone resorting. In effect, patients' legs become longer after the surgery. The Birmingham Hip ® system eliminates these problems.

Dr Sombat Rojviroj says that the main advantages of hip resurfacing over replacement are that there is no large stem to be inserted into the femur, and leg lengthening does not occur. Dr Rojviroj says "The BIRMINGHAM HIP™ Resurfacing (BHR) has the largest independently verified clinical history of any resurfacing device available today… The results at 10 years have been excellent and all at least as good as conventional hip replacement."

The average cost in the US of hip replacement is $25,000, with $56,000 not an uncommon quote. While costs must be determined after consultation with an individual patient, having this procedure done at Bangkok Hospital could save patients tens of thousands of dollars. Surgeries at Bangkok Hospital are lower than US costs by up to 95%, with most surgeries costing around 50% of US prices.

The resurfacing is also usually a lower cost procedure than traditional replacements. In Australia, resurfacing costs 10% less than hip replacement.

Osteoarthritis is the main indicator for hip replacement. With an estimated 60% of the population to have symptomatic osteoarthritis by age 65, and 80% with radiographic evidence of the disease, this procedure will be an important one for the future.
