TMNK – The Me Nobody Knows
Art is My Weapon: Notes From A Neo-American Visualist
March 26 – April 23
Opening March 26, 6 – 8pm
Gallery Hours: Tue – Sat, 11am – 6pm
In search of the most direct means of communication, TMNK developed a complex urban hieroglyphics that is influenced by Afro-American themes, urban culture, political icons and street motifs. His poignant and provocative imagery, including a mélange of fragmented figurations, symbols and words, resembles modern-day cave drawings. These drawings are reflections and comments on current socio-political concerns.
The paintings utilize wildly diverse materials, ranging from conventional paint, marker and spray paint on canvas, shopping bags, masonite and other surfaces. To capture the urgency of his subjects, TMNK rapidly lays loose streaks of paint and bold outlines over an earthy translucent wash. His canvases exhibit a raw physicality, aggressive gestures, chaotic scratching, and distorted words in graffiti-style font. TMNK’s ability to convey the sense of vulnerability that stems from the turmoil of our contemporary urban life makes him unique amongst street artists.
TMNK’s work has been shown at U-Space Gallery, GA; Art Whino, MD; Gaylord Convention Center, DC; Fusion Gallery, NJ; Taller Boricua, NY, Lott Gallery, NY; Heath Gallery, NY; APW Gallery, NY; Museum of Modern Art, NY; and Le Biciclette in Milan.
