January 31, 2008 - The Education Station will be offering Arkansas History workshops at the Jones Center for Families. Rebecca Haden, Certified Arkansas History Teacher Trainer, will conduct the workshops. They will be hands-on, make and take sessions based on the new social studies and science standards. Participants will receive samples of the forthcoming Arkansas History materials from The Education Station.
Arkansas teachers are required to have two hours of professional development in Arkansas history each year. The Education Station's workshops, which have been a staple for Northwest Arkansas teachers for 10 years now, are designed to provide practical support for area teachers.
"We know that teachers aren't coming to the workshops just for fun," says owner Pam Gilbreath. "Of course the workshops are fun, but the most important thing is that participants can go back to their classrooms the next day and teach their Arkansas unit."
All K-6 teachers in Arkansas are required, by law, to teach a unit of Arkansas history each year. When the law went into effect a decade ago, most had never taken a class in Arkansas history. Now, about half of Arkansas teachers have taken such a course, but many feel that the classes they've taken aren't directly applicable to their classrooms.
The Education Station's workshops are based on the state frameworks for Social Studies, and focus on classroom teacher's needs.
Workshops will be held from 9-11 a.m. Afternoon sessions will be added if needed. All workshops will be at the Jones Center in Springdale. The materials fee for each workshop is $20. Pre-registration is required. Continuing education credit is available.
