Aquariums' Use of Mobile Technology Spawns Fun Learning Opportunities for Families

Swimmingly Good Time Awaits with Audio Touring and Text Messaging Scavenger Hunt Games.

(1888PressRelease) September 11, 2009 - SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - Guide by Cell Inc., the nation’s leading mobile technology provider for aquariums, zoos, and nonprofit organizations, announced that its cell phone audio tour and text messaging services are being used at the Florida Aquarium and the Seattle Aquarium. Both are home to thousands of fish species which visitors can explore in great depth with Guide by Cell audio tours. The Florida Aquarium’s audio tour is complemented by an educational text messaging and scavenger hunt game. Visitors can also learn about the wonders of undersea life right on their phone.

To listen to the Florida Aquarium audio tour, dial (813) 217-8489 (press 1#-14#).

The Seattle Aquarium’s audio tour features one of its newest exhibits: “Window on Washington Waters” where guests are invited to observe divers maintaining the large tank and feeding fish. The tour helps visitors learn how we’re all connected to the ocean and how we can keep it healthy and clean.

To listen to the Seattle Aquarium audio tour,
dial (206) 569-9211 (press 1#-11).
Visitors participating with either aquarium’s cell phone audio tour will find the experience effortless and fun. Requiring nothing more than a cell phone, they need only locate signs indicating a cell phone stop posted throughout the aquarium facility. Each stop lists various types of information along with a corresponding local telephone number to dial in to hear and learn more.

“Guide by Cell mobile services delivers a unique way for our aquarium to educate the public about informative facts about fish, the undersea habitat, and the fascinating world of marine life,” said Polly Perkins, Exhibit Developer at the Florida Aquarium. “Our audio tour brings a wonderful added dimension to undersea life, and with our text messaging services we were able to create an engaging interactive scavenger hunt game requiring families or groups to work and play together to read questions when prompted on a cell phone, locate it within our facility, and then reply by texting their answers.”

“At the Seattle Aquarium we see over 800,000 guests a year; 50,000 of them students,” said Sue Donohue Smith, Guest Experience Manager of the Seattle Aquarium. “Thousands of people are fascinated about marine life, and so many budding marine biologists visit the aquarium. Therefore, we wanted to make it truly memorable by enhancing their visit. We chose Guide by Cell mobile technology to do just this. Not only have they help helped us turn our guests’ cell phones into a wonderful accessory for learning and expanding their knowledge, but they’re helping us spark imagination in the minds of your next generation of experts in marine life.”

“Aquariums are remarkable and inspiring facilities to visit,” said David Asheim, Founder and President of Guide by Cell. “The Florida Aquarium and the Seattle Aquarium are excellent examples of two aquariums using engaging and easy to use technology. We hope that the cell phone experience contributes to a better experience and repeat visits, Guide by Cell is very proud to be associated with these two superb aquariums.”

“We are exhibiting at the upcoming Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) Annual Conference in Portland, Oregon on September 12 – 17th, where we will be showcasing several new products, including our AZA sponsored iPhone application,” added Asheim.
