February 19, 2009 - Dubbed as Arabia’s Premier Sport Fishing Event, the Sinbad Classic is organized by Intevents LLC, the leading sports event management company in the country; under the patronage of Ministry of Sports Affairs and the Ministry of Tourism. The Sinbad Classic has played host to anglers from Oman, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, America, England, Canada, Kuwait, and UAE, among others.
According to Mr. Bruce Fennessy, Sr. Manager – Sports and Corporate Events at Intevents, who is also the tournament director for the event, “Sport fishing attracts a large market globally. The Sinbad Classic is a platform that helps promote awareness within the international community of Oman’s vast riches which are greatly available to sport fishing enthusiasts and travelers alike.”
Themed ‘Sustainability through Sport’, the Sinbad Classic stimulates the government’s thrust towards conserving the natural resources, diversifying travel and sports activities; and promoting Oman as a unique travel and sports destination.
“Many tournaments around the world focus entirely on catch and release fishing. Any fish caught is brought to the boat, photographed and then released back into the ocean. The Sinbad Classic is trying to reach this point but first we place a focus on conservation. The event places limits on the amount of fish they catch in each species and also requires a minimum weight. We ask that any undersized fish caught have to be returned to the ocean so that they mature and are able to reproduce, therefore building up the fish stocks”, Mr. Fennessy said.
He also added that “Fish stocks globally are dwindling at an alarming rate. Blue Fin Tuna stocks which were once abundant in the Mediterranean are now almost completely wiped out. Thus, the Sinbad Classics incorporates the best methods, some fresh ideas and brand new rule changes, to ensure that we help to build up these fish stocks over the next few years”.
Organized by Intevents LLC for five successive years, The Sinbad Classic 2009 is being made possible by Khimji Watches, together with Rolex, the Shanfari Group of Companies, Masafi, Nomad Tours, Hatteras Collection, the Grand Hyatt Muscat, Ocean Active, African and Eastern and Hooked on Africa Fishing Charters.
