Dallas, TX (1888PressRelease)
April 05, 2008 - The Dallas Derby Devils proudly present the 2008 season opening bout on April 12th, in North Richland Hills, Texas. Since their 2007 season ended last September, the Devils have been painstakingly hitting the track in preparation for this year’s seven game season. This year brings some surprises with the move to the NYTEX Sports Centre in North Richland Hills. NYTEX currently houses Central Hockey League’s Texas Brahmas and the Tejas Volleyball Junior Club.
Along with a beautiful new home, the Devils will be introducing twenty-eight rookie skaters on all five DDD teams, “The Slaughterers”, “The High Seas Hotties”, “The Wrecking Crew”, “The Suicide Shifters”, and “The Death Row Rumblers”. Last year, the Slaughterers gained the lead as the number one team in the Dallas Derby Devils with an undefeatable winning streak, but this year any team could steal their crown. Will The Wrecking Crew hold a grudge against The Slaughterers for defeating them during the 2007 Championship? Will the Death Row Rumblers step up their game and prove they deserve victory this season? This will be the most action-packed Saturday night EVER!
The competition will take place on April 12, 2008 at NYTEX Sports Centre (8851 Ice House Drive, North Richland Hills, TX 76180) and doors open at 7:00pm with skating starting at 7:30pm. The Devils expect a full capacity crowd. This bout will sell-out, get your tickets to this PG-13 event in advance for only $13 on our website (www.derbydevils.com), or for $12 at Woodward Skatepark at Grapevine Mills Mall, and through your favorite DDD skater. If available, tickets at the door will be $15, kids 12 and under are free. Beer and concessions available at the NYTEX Sports Centre.
To start off the night, The Suicide Shifters will take on The High Seas Hotties. Both teams will begin this season with several talented rookie skaters while the Shifters are also under the command of a new captain. The second game of the evening pits the aggressive skating Slaughterers against the lighting fast Wrecking Crew. While the Wrecking Crew has gained some awesome new talent, the Slaughterers have a strong roster of seasoned skaters. A special performance by local rock legends, 1000 Miles From Home ensures the action never stops.
A portion of proceeds from this bout will benefit The Camp I-Thonka-Chi Parkland Burn Camp. In 1991, employees of Parkland Health and Hospital System proposed a plan that would allow children who had been hospitalized with burn injuries an opportunity to share time with others who face similar life-altering challenges. This time would be spent in a positive environment where new friends are made and a new level of acceptance would be realized. Thus, a vision was born to open a camp for children who have been hospitalized with burn injuries, Camp I-Thonka-Chi. After the completion of their 2007 home season, the Dallas Derby Devils hosted numerous interleague bouts with the Rocky Mountain Rollergirls (Denver, CO), Green County Rollergirls (Tulsa, OK), Tornado Alley Rollergirls (Oklahoma, OK), North West Arkansas Rollergirls (Fayetteville, AR), Texas Rollergirls (Austin, TX), and Houston Roller Derby (Houston, TX) as well as traveling outside of Texas to Baltimore, Maryland to take on the Charm City Rollergirls. Currently DDD is ranked 19th in the country out of 40 other amateur roller derby leagues.
When not at practice, the Devils continue the business of promoting and growing the league across North Texas. Clearly, DDD discovered a formula for success and are becoming stronger every season, heading into their fourth year of existence. The league is one of the largest of its kind, boasting the biggest roster of active skaters in the south. Volunteers are welcome. Referees, stats, security, and production helpers are a just few of the open positions. The league’s sponsorship drive remains underway to defray the league’s operating costs. Sponsors get bragging rights about being part of the derby revival at a ground level as they help the Dallas Derby Devils support worthy causes; a portion of all proceeds are donated to local charities.
