Akeley Wood Senior School In Buckingham At The Forefront Of E- Learning With Autology – A New Era Independent Learning Tool

A school in Buckingham is using technology to help pupils become more independent learners, preparing them for the world of work.


(1888PressRelease) February 23, 2008 - Akeley Wood Senior School in Buckingham has put itself at the forefront of e-learning by installing Autology (www.autology.org), the ground-breaking new learning tool that enables pupils to work more independently and improve their attainment at the click of a mouse.

Pupils no longer need to trawl through textbooks or decipher relevant information from hundreds of web pages as Autology ‘pushes’ multi-media information (text, picture, video and sound), appropriate to a learner’s ability and aptitude, to their PC desktop as they are working. This intelligent software is also helping to tackle issues such as, e-safety, the quality of information on the internet and the need to equip pupils for an increasingly competitive world.

The Government’s aim by 2010 is for schools to achieve a more personalised approach to teaching and learning using technology. By installing Autology, Akeley Wood Senior School – a secondary school with 540 pupils – is taking positive steps to achieve this goal.

Autology helps to improve pupils’ attainment at school by developing their evaluation and analysis skills. They simply type in a question and choose their age group and Autology pushes carefully tailored and relevant information, unique to the learner, when they need it and as they need it. Additionally, as a pupil composes text in a Word document, for example, Autology matches the key concepts and pushes relevant reference sources to the student.

Pupils now use the web as a prime source of information but much of the material is irrelevant to classroom study so they can waste a lot of time and easily become distracted. Autology keeps learners on task as it only provides materials which link directly to the syllabus, from major publishers such as Heinemann, Letts and Encyclopaedia Britannica plus thousands of credible websites. It also eliminates the worry of pupils accessing unsuitable information or materials which have been created for US markets.

Dr Jeremy Grundy, Headmaster at Akeley Wood School, said: “Installing Autology has had a very positive impact on independent learning in our school. It is helping our pupils to use their own initiative on tasks, which will prove invaluable for their lives beyond school. It is also helping us to meet the Government’s target to achieve a more personalised approach to teaching and learning by 2010.”
