  • (1888PressRelease) December 07, 2012 - Adelphi University's second Relay for Life fundraiser to benefit the American Cancer Society officially launched on November 28, 2012. Students and faculty came together for the Kick-Off rally to encourage everyone on campus to sign up for Relay, join a team, and learn about this life-saving event. The annual relay helps to promote cancer awareness and raises money for cancer patients and research. Relay for Life at Adelphi will take place on April 5, 2013, but registration starts now. The Kick-Off successfully used games and music to gain people's interest and resulted in more than 100 Adelphi students and faculty registered. Those who signed up received Relay for Life bracelets; those who chose to be team captains were also given Relay for Life sunglasses. Participants raise funds throughout the year and on the night of the event. The event is open to the entire community and other activity events will be planned leading up to Relay in April 2013.

Relay for Life, the world's largest grassroots fundraising movement, mobilizes communities throughout the country to celebrate people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and provide participants with an opportunity to fight back against the disease. Relay brings together friends, families, businesses, hospitals, schools, faith-based groups, and people from all walks of life-all aimed at furthering the American Cancer Society's vision of creating a world with less cancer and more birthdays.

Relay for Life of Adelphi University is an annual overnight event where the campus community can honor and celebrate the lives of cancer survivors and victims. Cancer doesn't sleep, and neither will we until we find the cure. Teams take turns walking or running around a track to raise funds to fight cancer. Cancer survivors from the University and community take the first lap of the night. A highlight, the emotional luminaria ceremony honoring those affected by cancer. Lighted luminaria bags represent those who have lost their battle against cancer or who are still fighting. During the ceremony, all teams, participants and volunteers take a lap together and remember those affected by the terrible disease. Last year, Adelphi University attracted more than 600 people to the all-night walkathon and raised more than $43,000-well above the $25,000 goal-for the American Cancer Society.

The American Cancer Society's Relay for Life reminds us that those lost to cancer will never be forgotten and that those who face cancer will always be supported. More than anything, it makes us hopeful that one day cancer will be eliminated for good.
