March 26, 2008 - WINGS TO FLY EVENT
Adele Schneidereit, the woman who is working toward the goal of being the first disabled person to fly around the world, spoke at the Challenger Space Center in Phoenix, AZ at the Wings to Fly Event. Schneidereit’s goal in this flight is to raise worldwide awareness for Cerebral Palsy.
During Wings to Fly, an event to interest girls in a career in aviation, several prominent women in aviation design, manufacturing, and piloting presented career options and opportunities to a gathering of young women at the Challenger Space Center. Currently, the field of aviation is 18% female to 82% male, a statistic hopefully to be balanced in part by the bright and energetic group of young women in attendance at the conference.
Ms. Schneidereit related to the girls Schneidereit’s own road to a career in aviation and engineering, the obstacles which she encountered because of being a woman with a disability, and a methodology of changing those obstacles into opportunities.
Leaders in at Challenger praised the success of the Wings to Fly:
“To have such a phenomenal group of speakers on hand and delivering such powerful and motivating presentations to the girls was such an honor” - Carole Glenn, Education and Outreach Coordinator
Schneidereit also shared her aspiration to be the first person with a disability to circumnavigate the globe solo in a small aircraft. She also presented a trailer of the film corresponding to the flight, Hemispheres, narrated by Chris Cooper.
Another pioneer speaking with Schneidereit at the conference was Vernice Armour, Retired Captain, First African American Female Combat Pilot.
