November 06, 2007 - Mr. Tony Killeen, T.D., Minister of State at the Department of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government, this evening (5th November) presented the awards at a ceremony held in the Radisson Hotel, Limerick. Birdhill in North Tipperary was named National Tidiest Village award for the second successive year.
According to Minister Killeen, "The standards in the Mid-West Region and nationally were extremely high again this year. I am delighted to see that Adare received a Gold Medal, which is a testament to the efforts of those involved."
There were a number of other successes for Limerick on the night. Knockainey picked up the Best New Entry (Category B) Award, Galbally received the County Highly Commended accolade, Ardpatrick won the County Commended award, Glenosheen received the County Endeavour Award, N. Rainsford in Doon won the Regional Shopfront Award, while Scoil Athain in Lisnagry received the Regional Schools Award.
Minister Killeen continued, "I would like to congratulate all participants from Limerick who have done their County proud. There was unprecedented interest in Tidy Towns this year, and I would urge all those who contacted the Department to take the next step and participate in 2008, the 50th anniversary of the competition."
The Minister stressed the importance of the work done by Limerick’s Tidy Towns volunteers and the Government's commitment to providing support to community and voluntary organisations.
Mr. John O'Callaghan, Director, SuperValu acknowledged the efforts made by new entrants to the Tidy Towns competition and expressed optimism that all new committees will retain the motivation to keep going and recruit more volunteers, particularly with the 50th anniversary coming up in 2008. He called on all committees to make next year's Tidy Towns event the biggest and the best ever.
The Tidy Towns competition is organised by the Department of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government and sponsored by SuperValu. SuperValu, and its 180 plus storeowners around the country, have sponsored the National Tidy Towns competition since 1992.
