Production declined 4.6% to 2.5 million tons. Acrylic fibre accounts for 6.8% in total man made fiber. ASF capacity has significantly declined in America due to the closure of plants in USA and Mexico. In terms of the contribution, Asia holds a major share of 59.5% in global production.

China is a major consumer of acrylic fibre followed by Turkey and Italy. China imports around 300 – 400 thousand tons of acrylic per annum and Turkey’s imports were around 100 – 150 thousand tons between 2002 and 2006. Major exporting countries are Japan, Germany and Taiwan. Japan exported around 238 thousand tons of acrylic in 2006.

YarnsandFibers expects ASF production to increase at the rate of 8% per annum between 2006 and 2012, thus taking the production to 2,725 thousand tons.
