January 18, 2007 - New York, NY-January 2007(Joy Ofili Enterprises)
In a provocative and thought-provoking anthology, Joy Ofili takes readers on a compelling journey through time with her intense poetry in the debut release “Poison: I No Longer Retreat”. With pieces such as Golden Africa, The Devil’s Demise, and Colonization of Black Thought, Joy raises the bar of conscious black poetry. Featuring 75 original poems, topics in “Poison” include: race, colonization, triumph, freedom, war, pride, and acceptance.
“Poison” is a book of life's struggles, of life's pain, of its joy, and of its ongoing cycle of transition. “Poison” takes readers on a quest toward liberation from fear, pessimism, and self-doubt. It provides readers with a foundation of empowering words and affirmations with a poetic twist. It gives people, from all walks of life, the tools to disarm the many detractors that have consistently aimed to keep them trapped instead of free, dependent instead of able, and afraid instead of courageous.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Golden Africa
It did not start with colonial times
Prior to that the gold flawlessly shined
It did not start with physical captivity
Prior to that there was immense prosperity
See the world was watching as the torch was lit
It traveled from the North
to the South of the continent
The people were systematically taking
things higher and higher
Until the idle ones came and burned
the entire land with fire
And today the Western world wants
to know what is going on
Somehow they got historic amnesia,
Don’t know where civilization was born
