April 10, 2007 - Richard Stratton, from Essex, England, came up with the idea of theonebigad.com whilst bed bound with a dislocated hip.
After graduating last year, Richard Stratton decided to establish his own company, he found the hardest factor was the high cost of marketing; “I knew I had a unique idea, however creating customer awareness was the most challenging and expensive process,” he said.
Richard, who is funding his company himself, by working part time doing jobs as diverse as farm work to punting in Cambridge, says he didn’t want to borrow more on top of his university debts which are already over £10,000.
Whilst bed bound, he decided to learn web design, so, Richard set out to create a site he had been thinking about for a while and to ultimately generate some money which would pay for his living expenses and help his business venture for which he could do little else due to his dislocation.
Richard explained the concept of theonebigad.com, “advertisers submit a banner for $10. Each day one of these is selected at random to appear on the top and bottom of every page of the site. Once 100,000 banner places have been sold one company is selected at random to receive The One Big Ad, the ultimate advertising budget of $250,000.”
He said that for a tiny investment of $10, businesses get the opportunity for the ultimate promotion, with a prize of $250,000 providing the potential for a television advert on a major network, not to mention all the press attention that would go with it.
To encourage initial sales the first 500 banner entrants will have their banners displayed on a page on theonebigad.com site.
Asked what he will do with the money raised, Richard said, “I hope to make my company as successful as possible, it’s something I have dreamt about for years and I will do anything to make it a reality. Although my dislocated hip seemed like a major setback, maybe thanks to theonebigad.com it will actually end up being a major bonus in a somewhat painful disguise!”
