August 08, 2007 - Lakshmidevi a resident of coimbatore was suffering from painful knee for the past few years. However recently the pain became so severe she hardly could take few steps. The sleep during night also has completely gone and life became so miserable for her. Finally she consulted Dr.Balasubramanian and opted for knee replacement surgery without hesitation. The surgery was successful and the patient started walking within 2 days and went home in a weeks time.. Delighted lakshmidevi told that her life is completely changed after surgery and looking forward to be painfree for the rest of her life .
Dr.G.Balasubramanian told that because of increasing life expectancy and change of life style thousands of people are suffering due to arthritis knee. Though knee replacement is very successful surgery in terms of pain relief and mobility, the patients are reluctant to undergo surgery at an early stage. They come to surgery only at a very late stage when the knees are bent and bowed. They should be encouraged to undergo surgery at an earlier stage so that they don’t have to suffer for years and also the bowing of the leg can be prevented. There is also a reluctancy to have surgery once they crossed 60 years of age. This lady is classical example knee replacement can be done even for people 100 years old. The anaesthesia and surgical techniques are very much developed and very safe nowadays.
Since this is the first time a knee replacement has been done for a 95 yr old lady in india, Limca books of world records has been approached in order to enter this feat in their next edition of the book.
