July 06, 2007 - 7th Annual South Jersey Caribbean Carnival
Summer is here again and the South Jersey Caribbean Cultural Organization is getting ready for the 7th Annual South Jersey Caribbean Carnival on Saturday July 14, 2007 from 12 PM until 8 PM at Wiggins Park on the Camden Waterfront.
This year marks the 7th year of this celebration of the color and culture of the Caribbean. This FREE family event features limbo dancers, fire eaters, moko jumbie (stilt walkers), children activities and Spanish dance groups performing on the concert stage as well as FREE children activities and cultural vendors. Caribbean Jerk Chicken, rice & peas, curry shrimp, and Roti are on the menu of food to be served at the Caribbean Carnival. Live Reggae, Latin, and Calypso music will be heard along with the pulsating sounds of Steel Drum.
Performers will include New Image Band formerly the Saka Boys, El Feco, Eddie Charles of Atlantik, Trinity, and more.
The South Jersey Carnival has been featured on Emeril Live!’s Caribbean Cookout episode airing on the Food Network.
A Special Tribute in honor of the life of the South Jersey Caribbean Carnival’s Founder and Event Organizer, Nkem Tshombe will be presented. Nkem Tshombe died March 1, 2007 of cancer leaving a legacy as an Educator and promoter of Caribbean music and entertainment.
Nkem Tshombe got his start on 90.1 Fm, a Temple University Radio Station, as an assistant producer and sit in host of “Caribbe”, the number one Caribbean Radio Show at the time. He promoted numerous Caribbean entertainers such as Calypso Rose over the years. He sponsored numerous trips to the Mother’s Day Calypso Extravaganza in New York as well as various trips to Caribbean Carnivals from Washington, DC to Toronto, Canada.
These experiences lead to the One World Caribbean Video TV show. His passion to promote Caribbean Culture extended by him Founding the South Jersey Caribbean Cultural and Development Organization, Inc in 2001 in Camden, NJ. His vision is to promote the culture, music, arts, and entertainment of the Caribbean Islands.
The South Jersey Caribbean Cultural Organization is a 501 c (3) non-profit organization based in Camden, New Jersey.
