Out of the 1,000 companies in the machine tools sector, 400 are Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs). Maharashtra, with a large base of OEMs, is one of the largest consumption centers of machine tools in India. AMTEX 2017 provides a platform for global players to help tap these consumption and production hot spots of Western India. However, there have been many challenges as well. There is a lack of infrastructure support in the rural areas. Skills gap is an issue that doges the industry. Rising automation too poses its own set of challenges, not to mention government policies like demonetization. While the government of Maharashtra has initiated the Make In Maharashtra campaign, they also need to focus on simplifying processes for starting businesses, provide a finishing school for students and reward import substitution efforts to help boost industrial growth in the machine tools sector."
