November 20, 2007 - Gillian Speke has collected together some of the best thinking and ideas in a single volume which is on sale now.
Gillian Speke does not refer to herself as an author, she is simply a person who has collected together some of the best thoughts and ideas regarding global issues today (including some of her own). Her book is a comprehensive encouragement to everyone that if we make just small changes in our thinking, attitudes and the way we allow our Governments to run our countries, that a significant step change is possible TODAY.
With personal experience of homelessness, Gillian challenges us all to examine our daily lives and stop making excuses for why we cannot improve things and to start putting effort towards real change. Her collection features on Amazon, and is free to download on her website in full. Not a traditional environmentalist, Gillian is actually a trained designer living in Devon who has seen the difference that small changes can make in real peoples lives. By focussing on actual change rather than 'issues' she reminds us that helping our immediate neighbour can be the difference that starts a cascade across the globe to fundamentally change the world.
Angry at the impotence or unwillingness of Governments to make these changes for us, Gillian demonstrates a myriad of practical ways in which we can affect society around us and move the globe towards the required step change. We can carry on the way that we are, but she points out that there will come a point where problems that affect 'other people' will quickly affect us.
By producing this collection Gillian Speke has published a challenging read. One that does not allow us to continue to make excuses without being clear that we do not want the responsibility to help the world. She forces us to examine the world around us and our influence on that world and ask whether there is a better way. She doesn't say we have to change, just that we should make a positive design that we do not care. By informing the reader Gillian hopes to influence decision making to actively encourage us to choose. To choose whether we are happy with the way the world is, or whether we want to contribute to a brighter future.
http://www.the-alternative.org.uk/ is the online home of this collection and features an active forum for us all to engage with these choices in a way that will allow all to make a positive contribution to our lives and the lives of others.
