February 21, 2009 - AWB's Better Workplace Awards recognize member businesses, both large and small, that go the extra mile in providing a family-friendly work environment, promote safety and enable their employees to excel. An independent panel of judges reviews nominees and decides who receives the award based on numerous factors.
AWB’s 2009 Better Workplace Award winners include Andelcare- a Bellevue based upscale private duty in-home care service. Andelcare won the award in the category of job training and advancement.
Owner Marla Beck states, “We are honored to be the recipients of this award. It’s wonderful to be recognized as the model for small businesses serving seniors and their family members. We have just set the bar extremely high for private duty in-home care providers, and we intend on keeping it that way! Our employees mean the world to us and to the families they serve each day.”
Andelcare is the perfect solution for seniors and others who aren't ready to leave their homes. Andelcare’s personalized and affordable services are available 7 days a week and can range from a few hours per day to 24 hour live in care.
Job Training at Andelcare
The company is caring for grandparents and parents so they realize how important it is to have a compassionate well trained individual working in someone’s home. They start by hiring only the “cream of the crop’ and all applicants go through a battery of tests and screenings that focus on skills, experience, attitudes and job fit. Applicants must pass the company hiring litmus test which is “would we feel comfortable having this potential employee care for our own mother?”
They lead the industry in training with their exclusive Certified Companion Aide (CCA) program. This includes the study of nineteen essential subjects such as: communication, personal care, mental health, disability issues and nutritional needs of the elderly. All employees complete this program and are mentored as they increase their knowledge, self confidence and professionalism.
Learning comes in many forms at Andelcare. There are monthly seminars called “View and Chew” where our staff enjoys a snack while learning new skills and techniques. We have guest speakers from various organizations talking on pertinent topics. Our staff can learn through a live seminar, be mentored on the job, self study courses with handouts or watch videos to gain additional training that fits their learning style.
Recognitions Programs at Andelcare
Each month we select a Caregiver of the Month and other awards called A Job Well Done. These recognitions are made when a caregiver does some exceptional follow-through or their client calls to tell us what an excellent caregiver they have. The caregivers selected receive a certificate, gift, lots of attention from the office staff and recognition in our caregiver and client newsletters.
Hiring, Promotions and Advancement at Andelcare
We encourage and promote the hiring of workers over the age of 50. Many needed jobs and training are provided to the older worker who may have been out of the workforce for an extended period of time due to family obligations. We promote from within by offering full-time jobs when available to our part-time employees and offering expanded job responsibilities to employees as they grow and advance in their positions. Andelcare works hard to provide excellent client service along with the best possible working environment.
