Cedar Rapids, IA (1888PressRelease)
June 20, 2008 - Storypeople has re-released the story ‘Promise.’ $19 of every $20 poster purchase will go directly to on-the-ground relief efforts for the flooded communities of Iowa.
Disasters come. Disasters go – only, much more slowly than they come. To support the long work of recovery from the flooding in the Midwest, Storypeople has again released the story and poster “Promise’ by the artist Brian Andreas.
The poster sells for $20 to both individuals and Storypeople galleries. $19 of that will go directly to the Greater Cedar Rapids Community Foundation, an organization chosen expressly for its commitment to providing immediate relief to projects in real need.Andreas originally designed ‘Promise’ to raise money for food banks after Katrina. In fact, it was the lesson of New Orleans – that interest ebbs and once vibrant neighborhoods struggle to recover alone – that inspired the poster’s re-release.
Located in the northeast of Iowa, Storypeople is acutely aware of what faces the flooded communities, renowned for their stoic self-sufficiency. The clean up is only the beginning.
Andreas’ Storypeople work features very short stories. Often wry and whimsical, some of the most popular are profoundly poignant. Numerous communities that have suffered tragic events have embraced Andreas’ belief that stories help us ‘remember the future’. His art has often been created to help express a renewed vision of healing and hope.
He and Columbine students collaborated in painting a mural that spoke of the future. His Awakening poster, designed days after September 11, raised $66,930.00. The first release of ‘Promise’ has raised thousands for those affected.
Promise text: the water washed away everything/ but the chance to begin again/so we came from cities & towns,/from long golden fields/ & we stood side by side/until we made a bridge to dry land,/ back to a place/ we have promised to hold safe/ for each other's children,/ back to a place called America
Storypeople has chosen The Greater Cedar Rapids Community Foundation to receive the collective profit from the poster sale (http://gcrcf.org/). The GCRCF orchestrates direct distribution of donations to community rebuilding needs.
The art of Brian Andreas is collected worldwide. His new paintings are currently featured in Michelle Kauffmann’s contribution to the Smart Home exhibit at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago.
