“Music Mkers of New Rochelle” is an exhibition created over the past months by The New Rochelle Council on The Arts about a dozen famous popular songwriters who lived and worked in that city over past decades, a fact that may not be well known to residents of the city and of Westchester County. The exhibition is being held at the New Rochelle Public Library from March 3 through March 31, 2007, and will feature photographs, record and CD albums, news clips and other biographical material about these composers, who have all become immortal over the years for their creation of popular music for everything from Broadway shows to pop records.
Working backwards through the 20th century, Alan Menkin (a graduate of New Rochelle High School Class of 1967) has been the composer of such Disney mega-hits as "Beauty and the Beast", "Aladdin", "Pocahontas" and "The Little Mermaid". Jerry Bock wrote the music for "Fiddler on The Roof". Peter DeRose wrote "Deep Purple" while sitting in a New Rochelle garden and Robert Allen composed "Home For The Holidays" and the Johnny Mathis hit "Chances Are" here in New Rochelle. Other music makers who will be featured include J. Fred Coots, Guy Davis, Paul Klein, Don McLean, Branford Marsalis, Claude Thornhill and Paul Whiteman.
The exhibition will also contain photos and other memorabilia about the Glen Island Casino in New Rochelle that hosted a ravishing collection of bands such as Glen Miller, Tommy Dorsey and Benny Goodman. In the dawning years of radio, the bands played music that was heard coast to coast. This was an era before World War II, before Rock 'n' Roll, and before two hundred television channels.
"Music Makers of New Rochelle" will also feature free public screenings of musical films being shown on four Sundays in March at 1:30 p.m. at the New Rochelle Public Library theater:
March 4 - "Fiddler on The Roof"
March 11 - "Aladdin"
March 18 - "Beauty and The Beast"
March 25 – "The Little Mermaid"
A reception for the exhibition, with both live and recorded music will be held on Sunday, March 18th from 5:15 to 7:00 P.M. at the library, and the public is cordially invited to attend.
The New Rochelle Council on The Arts is a not-for-profit arts organization that has brought hundreds of exhibitions, concerts and other cultural events to the citizens of New Rochelle and surrounding Westchester county for over 30 years.
