    About the Book:
Aemilia Bassano, daughter of an Italian musician at the Elizabethan Court, has ambitions to gain a place in aristocratic society and also to enter the artistic world of poetry and music exclusive to men. Her love for the theatre brings her into contact with William Shakespeare, and her entanglement with the actor/playwright, his rich libertine patron the Earl of Southampton, the magician Simon Forman, the charismatic Earl of Essex and the musician Alfonso Lanier, results in intrigue, jealous rivalries, deceit and betrayal, culminating in the publication of an unconventional book of poems.

    Excerpt from "Mr Shakespeare's Whore":
I entered the small dark attic room with its open casement, noting the disorder of books and papers scattered on the dusty floorboards and on the bed standing to one side. There was a chair beside a table which was covered with more papers, an inkpot, quills, a pen knife, a sanding pot, the stub of a candle, a tankard. A dusty livery cupboard had books stacked on top together with candleholders and a wine jug with a broken handle. On a small table stood a pewter bowl and ewer with two more tankards beside them and there was another chair hidden beneath a pile of clothing.

"I ought not to have disturbed you," I apologised, realising the impropriety of this intrusion.
"No, really, I am glad of the disturbance," he said eagerly, drawing forward the other chair, removing the assortment of garments and flinging them onto the bed. "At the moment my mind is a blank and at such times it is better to leave off for a while. Actually I was thinking of taking a walk by the river but this is better, unless you would care to accompany me. I'm afraid my quarters are not the most salubrious though much of this is my own fault as I forbid my landlady to tidy anything."

"I just wanted to tell you how excellent I think 'Venus and Adonis' is," I said realising how inadequate the words were and adding lamely, "It was an impulse as I was passing."

These are some of the 5-star reviews of this book on Amazon:

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant novel
    By C Joynt on 1 April 2011

This is a fascinating and wonderfully enjoyable novel about Shakespeare's "dark lady", thoroughly researched, it offers a rich background of Elizabethan life both in the theatre and in the court of Queen Elizabeth. Well known historical characters mingle with lesser or completely unknown ones (to me), this book creates a totally believable world full of detail and insight, I really didn't want "to put it down" as the relationships and story unfolded.
