April 20, 2007 - “Laughter is Healthy” is a phrase I say daily. I am the president of www.summitcomedy.com which books comedians for comedy clubs, colleges, corporate events, and nightclubs around the country. Bad things happen to good people all of the time, but the Virginia Tech tragedy is on such a huge scale, I felt like I needed to help out.
Summit Comedy, Inc. has been providing a weekly comedy night for “Attitudes Bar” www.attitudesbar.com located next to the Holiday Inn near campus for about 3 years, and is the hot spot in Blacksburg, VA on Wednesday nights. In the wake of this recent tragedy at the Virginia Tech campus, I felt like I had to assist, and when I received an email regarding the Hokie Spirit Memorial Fund that was created www.vt.edu/trage dy/memorial_fund.php, I jumped at the idea of doing a comedy benefit show titled “Laughter for Love” to raise money for this cause. I talked with the club manager Bryan Kay, and he was quite honored that I wanted to help out, and immediately said “Absolutely!”
The comedian response has been overwhelming! Countless comedians/Agencies wanted to volunteer their time to come in for the show, and even the ones who physically could not attend the show has donated DVDs, CDs, T-shirts, etc. to give away as part of the raffle for the benefit. “Laughter is Healthy”, and if we can make just one person forget for 2 hours the unfortunate recent events that has happened, then “Laughter for Love” is completely worth the time and effort.
I know the event will sell out since the venue only holds approx. 200 people, but hopefully with this press release, it will drive traffic to www.vt.edu/tragedy/memorial_fund.php to gain more donations to the Memorial fund. That is the goal!
A special thanks goes out to the staff of Holiday Inn/Attitudes Bar Blacksburg, VA and the nine comedians involved: Dale Hoffman, Brian Shirley, Jason Benci, Ross Duncliffe, Rodney, Norman, Tony Deyo, Shane Keith, Sue Bump, and Sheila Van Dyke, and the vendors who are helping make this event happen.
