May 13, 2007 - MARKETING COMPANY LICENSES “LADIES OF THE EVENING” AS NEW GUERRILLA ADVERTISING VENUE
WhoreVertising, an Oregon-based company is breaking new ground in marketing by offering LED-powered “scrolling billboards” attached to streetwalkers as an innovative, economical way for advertisers to reach potential customers.
WhoreVertising founder Robert Porter, 55, says he got the idea for the ground-breaking idea while driving through Portland, Oregon. Porter, a native of New York City transplanted to the Oregon coast, says, “I was forced off the freeway because of an accident and I found myself in a section of Portland I wasn't familiar with. I couldn't help but notice a number of young women walking the street in provocative outfits. I could see that other drivers noticed them too. It occurred to me that if these women had ads attached to them, the ads would also get a lot of eyeballs.”
Porter immediately began developing the idea he eventually named WhoreVertising. “My first concept was for the women to wear sandwich boards, but I found that they were bulky and difficult to wear on windy days. Also, the boards could only have one static ad on each side. I thought something better was needed and when I thought of scrolling billboards, I knew I really had something attention-getting.”
The scrolling billboards are like miniature versions of the signage found in Times Square, but lightweight, battery-powered and suitable for being attached to a person. They are bright enough to be read by a passing motorist and can easily be reprogrammed to change the message displayed as an advertiser's needs change. They can be attached to suspenders or to a lightweight backpack frame-type device.
Referring to his company's unusual name, Porter says, “Like the billboards themselves, the name WhoreVertising is designed to be provocative and attention-getting. My company does not condone illegal activity of any kind nor do we have knowledge of any illegal activity on the part of the independent contractors who wear our signs. They are contracted to wear signs in public to advertise our clients' goods and services only.”
WhoreVertising's contractors sign contracts acknowledging that they will become ineligible for work with the company if they are found guilty of any crime.
Porter says, “Our contractors are women who choose for personal reasons to exercise their right to use the public sidewalk during the evening on high-traffic streets. They are the ideal advertising medium for any company which seeks to get attention, especially from men 18-49, at an affordable cost.”
WhoreVertising will be rolling out its services in America's top 20 markets over the next 12-18 months. A company website is currently under construction.
