People love airplanes. The International Council of Air Shows estimates annual attendance at 10 to 12 million people in the US and Canada alone. Despite these huge attendance numbers, the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association reports about 600,000 pilots in the US. This includes people who fly for a living. So there is a problem. The barriers to get involved in flying are too high for most people. Aviation, for many remains a “love affair from afar.”
The cowardly events of September 11, 2001 are just one of many reasons why restrictions are placed upon being “up close and personal” with aircraft. Economic factors, more competition from other pastimes and the digital transformation of society also play a role. A freedom, not embraced, is easily lost.
Renegade Aviation is cultivating sponsor support for a nationwide initiative to get our children immersed in aviation at events all over the United States. This aviation event “experience” will combine Air Racing, air show performance and the opportunity for kids of all ages to get intimately involved with the aircraft and crew. “Today’s children simply do not have the opportunity to really see what is possible for them in aviation”, David Costa continues. “We know that without new supporters of General Aviation, the industry will continue to wither.”
The General Aviation Manufacturers Association (GAMA) reports that general aviation contributes well over $100 Billion to our economy each year. For each active pilot currently flying, there are many more people who dream about flying, but are not being cultivated into aviators.
Renegade Aviation has discovered that people’s dreams about aviation are squashed early. Renegade Aviation has spoken to tens of thousands of air show attendees, from all walks of life, for years. People want to experience the thrill, the sport and the fun of aviation. They want safety, they want to enjoy the experience, but they do not want the hassle. Has the aviation community purposely limited access to millions more who would actively participate? Have these people made the decision to take their money to hobbies and pursuits that are more encouraging and less daunting?
Children are the future of this country’s healthy aviation program. Without our kids begging for parents to take them to the airport, parents will spend that money elsewhere. Without new aviation enthusiasts (of all walks of life) knowing that they can set high goals and fly any kind of aircraft they choose, general aviation will offer fewer choices. This will create higher costs, user fees, more regulations or worse. Precious rights will be lost out of fears or the misinformation of the uneducated government.
The goal is to break down the barriers now placed upon people from entering aviation as a sport, a hobby or a passion.
