    About the Author:
Jim Lawler currently lives in Liverpool. He heard the hard way about crime, criminals and the police. When young he was convicted for criminal offences that included assault and burglary. He is now a much more reserved and thoughtful character. Other books by Jim Lawler include Mortal Shuffle and Hate Until Warm, both published by Red Rattle Books.

    Excerpt from the Book:
"Before his death he visited an off-licence near his home in Wood Green in North London. He bought tobacco, cigarette papers, a bottle of whisky and four cans of super strong lager. The cans of lager were over ambitious although Gabriel that evening sank all of the whisky. The Gabriel I knew was not averse to illegal substances, and the police found evidence of cocaine on the back of his guitar and traces of the white powder inside his nostrils. The sleeping pills were found inside his stomach because somebody had the bright idea of slitting open his abdomen after discovering spots of Temazepam stuck to his tonsils. The police are paid to be intuitive and they were but I have to work with the police, and, when they forget about the importance of evidence, it can be a fault.

This time, though, nobody begrudged them their intuitions. This is what the police thought happened. To be fair to the police most of it is empirically based. Gabriel walked to his flat after visiting the off-licence, put a CD of guitar heroes on the CD player, dragged his chair in front of the mirror, placed his guitar face down across his thighs, lined the cocaine on the back of the guitar, used the tobacco and papers from the off licence plus some marijuana to roll a couple of joints, drank the whisky, smoked the joints, sniffed the cocaine, decided against the cans of lager, threw his guitar against the mirror, probably cursed and told the Universe to take a flying how's your father, swallowed Christ knows how many sleeping pills and somehow died."

    Amazon review:
    5.0 out of 5 stars A skillfully-written thriller
By Wordly Traveller on 15 Dec. 2016
    Format: Paperback

A man with a violent past tries to find a missing novel written by a prize-winning author, whilst dubious friends from the past are being murdered, threatened or are committing suicide. The man teams up with his former wife to find the truth both about the missing novel and the demise of some of his past relations.

It's difficult to know whether to like the protagonist or despise him.

An engrossing novel full of twists and deceit.

Written in the present tense, this book could easily be converted into a film script and seems well-suited to the big screen.
